CHRISTOPHER WRENCH has been Organist & Music Director at St Mary's since 1994. Equally skilled as soloist, chamber player, liturgical musician and pedagogue, Christopher earned a reputation as one of the leading organists of his generation following highly acclaimed performances at international competitions in Calgary, Dublin, St Alban's and Odense, where he won 1st Prize in 1992.
Christopher performs widely in Australia, including appearances at the Melbourne International Festival of Organ and Harpsichord, the Sydney Festival, the Brisbane Festival, the New England Bach Festival, the Barraba Festival and Organs of the Ballarat Goldfields. Concerto engagements include performances with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, the Queensland Youth Symphony, The Canberra Symphony Orchestra, and the Adelaide Chamber Orchestra. He undertakes regular international tours, having performed in Austria, Canada, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, England (incl. Bournemouth International Festival, King's College, Cambridge & Westminster Abbey), Germany, Hong Kong, Italy and Sweden.
Christopher plays principal continuo and organ with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, is a founding member of Brisbane's dynamic contemporary Baroque ensemble 'The Four Elements', and has made numerous broadcasts on ABC ClassicFM and MBS community radio networks. In 2008 Christopher was awarded the Lord Mayor's Australia Day Cultural Award for his contribution to the musical life of Brisbane.
His broad solo repertoire spans many centuries
and includes the complete organ works of J.S.Bach, Brahms,
Buxethude, Mendelssohn, Mozart & Duruflé.
His Melba Recordings SACD of J.S.Bach's Six Organ Sonatas at the Garrison
Church, Copenhagen has received rare review from around the
globe.
Church Music
Christopher's life in church music began at the age of 10 playing
harmonium in his home parish of All Saints, Chermside.
Positions at St Michael & All Angels, New Farm (Organist,
1975-77), Christ Church St Lucia, Brisbane (Organist &
Choirmaster, 1977-82), St Salvator Catholic Church, Vienna
(Organist, 1984-86), Christ Church, Vienna (Organist &
Choirmaster, 1986-90) preceded his appointment as Organist/Music
Director at St Mary's Kangaroo Point, Brisbane (1994-present).
Education:
Christopher received his musical education at the
Queensland Conservatorium of Music, majoring in piano with Nancy
Weir and studing organ with Robert Boughen & Graeme
Morton.
As an organist, he won the 1982 Robert-Stolz-Award (an
Australia-wide competition for all instruments), which led to
post-graduate study at the Vienna Conservatorium and the Vienna
University of Music, where he was a student of renowned Bach
scholar, Michael Radulescu.
In 1983 he earned the distinction of being the first student
organist ever invited by Peter Planyavsky to give a recital in
Vienna's St Stephen's Cathedral.
Christopher returned to Brisbane in 1991 to become Lecturer in
Organ Studies at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith
University.
