CHRISTOPHER WRENCH (Director of Music)

CHRISTOPHER WRENCH was appointed Organist/Director of Music at St Mary’s in 1994. One of Australia’s foremost organists, Christopher is a distinguished graduate of the Queensland Conservatorium of Music (piano / Nancy Weir), the Vienna Conservatorium, and the Vienna University of Music (organ / Michael Radulescu). A prizewinner at numerous international competitions including Melbourne (1st Prize, 1985), Odense (1st Prize, 1992), St Albans (Audience Prize) and Dublin, Christopher performs regular recitals, concertos and broadcasts throughout Australia and abroad.

Wrench has appeared at the Sydney Festival, the Brisbane Festival, Melbourne Autumn Music Festival, the Australian Festival of Chamber Music, the New England Bach Festival, the Barraba Festival, Organs of the Ballarat Goldfields; and as soloist with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, The Queensland Orchestra, the Camerata of St John’s, the Adelaide Chamber Orchestra, and The Queensland Youth Symphony Orchestra.

Annual international tours have taken him to Austria, Canada, the Czech Republic, Denmark, England (incl. Westminster Abbey, King’s College Cambridge), Germany, Hong Kong, Italy and Sweden.

Christopher’s broad solo repertoire spans many centuries and includes the complete organ works of J.S.Bach, Duruflé, Hindemith and Mendelssohn. In addition to solo recitals, Christopher Wrench is active as a liturgical musician, teacher, chamber player and Lieder accompanist. With a reputation as an outstanding collaborator, he has performed with leading Australian artists such as Diana Doherty (oboe), Daniel Mendelow (trumpet), Yoram Levy (trumpet), Jason Barry-Smith (baritone), Margaret Schindler (soprano), Markus Stocker (cello), Paul Boyd (dancer/choreographer), and Emily Cox (choral director).

Christopher Wrench is founding artistic director of the concert series ‘Music at St Mary’s’ and part-time Lecturer in Organ at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University. In 2008 he was awarded the Lord Mayor’s Australia Day Cultural Award for his outstanding contribution to the musical life of Brisbane.ng>

Christopher’s CD of J.S.Bach’s Organ Sonatas was released by Melba Recordings in August 2009.
