St Mary’s 150th Celebration

History

The Parish of Kangaroo Point began its life in 1849 in a small wooden church building in John Street. In 1873, a newly erected church building, made of Brisbane Tuff from the nearby cliffs, was consecrated by the then Governor of Queensland, His Excellency the Marquis of Normanby. The other two buildings that now make up this historic precinct followed, with the Hall built in 1879 and the Rectory in 1889. The site is an iconic landmark of Brisbane and was listed on the Queensland Heritage Register in 1992.

Although the demographic of Kangaroo Point and St Mary’s has changed dramatically over its 150 years, the Parish is still an active place of worship and of significant family events, with some current Parishioners having links that extend back generations.

We welcome visitors and new parishioners to share this very special place with us.

CelebratING ALL YEAR LONG

What a fabulous event! Thank you to all involved. The general feedback from those who attended was 12/10 and “when are you going to do it again!” We were able to support QIMR Ocular Melanoma research to the tune of $6,000 and also have some left over for St Mary’s heritage restoration projects.    All due to the very hard work of so many of our volunteers.

Jazz on the Lawn at St Mary’s

We gathered on the lawn of our heritage listed church, overlooking the Brisbane River and across to the City to listen to the Australian Navy Jazz Band and well known Brisbane Jazz Pianist, Michael Faragher. What a great evening. Families, couples and visitors enjoyed the evening, some just hearing the music from the park and coming in.

Mother’s Day High Tea

Thanks to all the Mums, Grandmas, Daughters, Granddaughters and friends who helped us share an afternoon when we sat back and were served by the fellas! Decadent sweet treats, delicious savoury morsels and bubbles mixed with much conversation made the afternoon fly by.

Cars & Coffee

It could be described as an old style Church Fete with a difference! Vintage & Classic cars, Coffee & Cakes, Sausage Sizzle and Trash & Treasure.

Celebration Eucharist - Sunday, 5th November, 2023, marks the 150th anniversary of the consecration of St Mary’s Anglican Church, overlooking the Brisbane river and beyond to the city. A celebration Eucharist was held followed by a luncheon.
