Director of Music & Organist

Brett Sturdy is a Pianist, Conductor, Organist, occasional Composer/Arranger, currently serving as Organist and Director of Music at St Mary’s, Kangaroo Point, Music Director of Chordiality, sessional staff member at Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University, and regular guest with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, and Pianist at the Queensland Ballet.

A graduate of the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, Brett studied Classical Piano with Natasha Vlassenko, Organ with Christopher Wrench, Orchestral Conducting with Dr Peter Morris and Johannes Fritzsch, and Choral Conducting with Emily Cox.

Choral Scholars

Nic Bull graduated from the University of Queensland with a Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Education, studying with Leslie Purvis. Over the years, Nic has had the pleasure of singing with choirs such as the National Youth Choir of Australia, St Stephen’s Schola and Brisbane Chamber Choir.

Nic is excited to return to St Mary’s as Choral Scholar, a position he held in the early 2000s which started his choral journey.

Josephine Gibson is a composer and vocalist living and working on Yuggera, Turball, Gadigal, Wangal, Wiradjuri and Gamilaraay lands. Having completed a Bachelor of Music (Honours) at the Sydney Conservatorium under the tutelage of Paul Stanhope in 2016, she has worked as a composer and chorister with Moorambilla Voices, Sydney Chamber Choir, The Australian Voices, Leichhardt Espresso Chorus, Luminescence and The Song Company. She is currently completing a degree in philosophy and criminology at the University of Queensland.

Choir

The Choir of St Mary's is a passionate and talented group of volunteer singers, directed by Brett Sturdy, and supported by Choral Scholars Josie Gibson and Nic Bull, whose mission is the enrichment of the parish Sunday 9am Sung Eucharist.  The choir enjoys a wide repertoire, encompassing styles ranging from plainchant right through to new works from the 21st century.
